Introduction to Research at the Historical Society

The Historical Society has many materials to assist patrons undertaking various aspects of research about New Hartford.

Index of Books & Manuscripts…

We have an extensive Index of Books, Journals, Magazines, Manuscripts, Scrapbooks & Newspapers. Some of our books about Connecticut or Litchfield County specifically cover New Hartford or profile New Hartford citizens. Similarly, the Lure of the Litchfield Hills published for 50 years has articles about Connecticut, regional and New Hartford History. Our index details the articles in the Lure about New Hartford. We have about 46 books by New Hartford authors and 4 books about New Hartford people or families (including Earl Barnes, Chloe Lankton, and Horace Pitkin).

Our manuscript collection is organized with the following categories: Business, Churches, Military, Organizations, People, Schools and Weather.

Two weekly newspapers were once published in New Hartford-the Litchfield County Times and the New Hartford Tribune. We have issues of the Litchfield County Times for 1893 and all of the issues of the New Hartford Tribune on microfilm, from December 1881 to January 1911.

Index of Records, Tape Recordings & Videotapes

Our index of Records, Tape Recordings & Videotapes includes 19 records, 20 tape recordings, and 1 videotape on New Hartford People in the Arts. Most of our records are of the opera soprano Teresa Stich-Randall, who was born in New Hartford, and who had quite an illustrious career. Our tape recordings are largely interviews with many of our older residents documenting their recollections about various aspects of New Hartford life-from business and industrial life to social and cultural life.

Index of Photos & Post Cards…

Our entire Index of Photos & Post Cards includes over 1,300 photos, post cards, tin types and glass negatives is invaluable-not only for the research scholar but for those merely interested in New Hartford’s past. Photos are often accompanied by an extensive description. Many photos of people contain biographical information. Photos of houses often contain information as to when the house was built and its various owners.

One can arrange to have copies of any of the images in the collection. Please refer to our Policies & Procedures for further guidelines.

Index of Scrapbooks & Topical Files

Our Index of Scrapbooks & Topical Files includes all of our 13 scrapbooks which have been indexed. We have started to index our topical files-arranged in subject categories from A to Z. We will continually update this index as we proceed to index more topical files. The current index only contains topics within the letters A & B.

Index of Cemetery Records

Our Index of Cemetery Records is an alphabetical index of 3841 persons buried in New Hartford’s nine cemeteries, including the Gill Memorial Garden that contains many cremated remains. The nine cemeteries include:

  • Bakerville Cemetery
  • Gill Memorial Garden (at St. John’s Episcopal Church)
  • Immaculate Conception Cemetery
  • Old Nepaug Cemetery
  • New Nepaug Cemetery
  • North Village Cemetery
  • Pine Grove Cemetery
  • Pine Meadow Cemetery
  • Town Hill Cemetery

We also have burial records in our topical files-from 1893 and 1975. These are not yet indexed, but are available at Greystone, our permanent home and headquarters.

Genealogical Research at the Historical Society

The Historical Society has very few published genealogies. The genealogies we have are listed in our Index of Books & Manuscripts. Our Index of Cemetery Records and our burial certificates (mentioned above) should aid the genealogist. We also have many obituaries filed under “People” in our topical files. Our scrapbooks which are all indexed (see Index of Scrapbooks & Topical Files) also contain some obituaries. And for individuals searching about ancestors who lived or died in New Hartford between December 1881 and January 1911, our microfilm of the weekly New Hartford Tribune should be invaluable. Since the paper is not indexed, however, patrons would need to know the date of the event they are looking for in order to have much success using this option.

Other Indexes we are developing:

The Business Index

We have a current listing of 685 businesses that have ever done business in the town. This index is not yet ready for posting on our web site but is available to people who come to our home and headquarters to conduct research.

The New Hartford Tribune Index

We have started to index The New Hartford Tribune, a weekly newspaper published from December 1881 to January 1911. Thus far, we have 323 entries arranged by various topics. This index is not yet ready for posting on our web site but is available to people who come to our home and headquarters to conduct research.
